Best of Everything: Music
On my former site, Veritas Lux Mea, I wrapped up 2005 and the Best of
Everything Series with perhaps the coup de grace of the whole shebang:
Music.
Most of these tracks are from 2005, a few obvisously aren't, but who's
counting, right? Quite a few are from YouSendIt so you'll have to make
sure you get them while they last; others should stick around for the
meantime So sit back, relax and enjoy. And as always, comments are
welcome, bitches.
Veritas Lux Mea Album of the Year: Bear vs. Shark - Terrorhawk
Two tracks off their first album:
Bear vs. Shark - "Ma Jolie"
Bear vs. Shark - "Buses/No Buses"
A few off Terrorhawk:
Bear vs Shark - "5,6 Kids"
Bear vs. Shark - "Great Dinosaurs with Fifties Section"
Bear vs. Shark - "Catamaran"
Bear vs. Shark - "Michigan" (thanks to Gorilla vs. Bear)
You can have your Antony and the Johnsons, your Surfjan and your Rogue
Wave, because I've got my fucking rock and roll and it comes in the
form of Bear vs. Shark. I'm fairly new to the punk scene but when I
got a hold of BVS' Terrorhawk it changed my music selection for the
next couple months, sending me on a forray into the world of the punk
and post-punk landscape. If you don't like the album, well, that's
your opinion; but for my vote, Terrorhawk is most straight-ass kicking
yet brilliantly crafted punk album put out this year.
Vote Terrorhawk for the Best Punk Album of the Year
Ted Leo - Sword in the Stone (Balgeary)
Ted Leo has been huge for me ever since I first came across his "Me
and Mia" track. His Shake the Sheets album is a near daily play for me
and the rest are all pretty fantastic.
Ted Leo - "Me and Mia" (thanks to Sixeyes)
Thanks to Derek over at Good Weather for Airstrikes for the following
Ted Leo tracks. I highly recommend you check out their blog:
Ted Leo - "Since You Been Gone" (Kelly Clarkson cover)
Ted Leo - "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone"
Ted Leo - "Hearts of Oak"
Ted Leo - "The High Party"
Ted Leo - "Tell Balgeary, Balgury is dead"
Black Box Recorder - "New Baby Boom"
I just love this chick's voice. Sounds like it should be on some Zach
Braff movie soundtrack.
Antony and the Johnsons - "Fistful of Love" (w/Lou Reed)
Personally, this is really the only song I can stand off the album. I
don't see what the big fuss is about.
Danger Doom - "Benzi Box"
Love the beat, holmes.
Franz Ferdinand - "I'm Your Villain"
Franz Ferdinand - "Eleanor Put Your Boots On"
Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out (Take Me Please Remix by Bebop)"
I've been a fan of Franz since they came on the scene with their last
album. Unfortunately, this album sounds basically just the same, but
not as good. How long can you go producing the same old stuff? Idk,
ask the Strokes.
HORSE the Band - "A Million Exploding Suns"
HORSE the Band - "Sand"
HORSE the Band - "Birdo"
HORSE the Band - "Black Hole"
Personally, I fucking love this band. Bear vs. Shark opened for them
in Penn Run, but I wasn't able to stick around for their set. Luckily
I just got my hands on their cd, The Mechanical Hand. Mixing hardcore,
electronic nintendo beats and punk, HORSE the Band is a fresh new
sound that I hope you'll appreciate.
Motion City Soundtrack - "Attractive Today"
Great, catchy track. What's left to say?
The Darkness - "Is It Just Me"
If you can't appreciate The Darkness for what they do, then you can't
appreciate music today.
Pennywise - "Knocked Down"
First track off Pennywise's new CD. Not as great as their other stuff,
less hardcore, still good.
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals - "The Hardest Part"
I've got a soft spot for Ryan Adams and this is just another reason
why.
Stars - "What I'm Trying to Say"
This entire CD is fantastic, a must have.
The National - "Karen"
My favorite track off their Alligator album, for the lyrics if nothing
else.
The National - "Baby We'll Be Fine"
Murphys Law - "Crucial Barbeque"
A classic. I saw them play this in Pittsburgh a month ago. Rocked the
house.
The Features - "Blow It Out"
The Features - "Exhibit A"
Another must have album.
The Shins - "Pink Bullets"
The Killers - "Mr Brightside"
Radiohead - "Fake Plastic Trees" (Live and beautiful)
Chin Up Chin Up - "Virginia Don't Drown"
Billy Joel - "Piano Man"
Kaiser Chiefs - "I Predict a Riot"
Neutral Milk Hotel - "Ghost"
Rogue Wave - "10:1"
Xiu Xiu - "Bog People"
Coldplay - "Spies"
Arcade Fire - "Neighborhood No. 3 (Power Out)"
Morrissey - "This Charming Man"
Stellastarr - "Jenny"
Muse - Bliss music video
Just some favorites.
