mp3 Music industry's insanity, Lauren Bacall disses Cruise, Jim Jarmusch

* Mark Cuban's illuminating article on the insanity of the music

industry.

There is an old saying that the definition of insanity is, "Doing

the same thing over and over again expecting the outcome to

change"...

Insanity is thinking that kids with more time than money will stop

finding ways to get music for free. Even if the industry found the

end all be all DRM solution that stops 100 pct of duplication, kids

will sit in front of their radios with recording capability or

redirect digital music from any source to their hard drives and

then spend the time to pick out the music they like and burn it.

* Classic Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall disses Tom Cruise.

Ouch. Bet that smarts worse than that squirting microphone.

* Jim Jarmusch - The Last of the Indies

If you haven't seen 'Dead Man' or 'Ghost Dog', you are missing out

on two idiosyncratic classics from one of the last influential

American indie directors who has remained true to his craft. His

new film, 'Broken Flowers', features Bill Murray as a recently

dumped guy who embarks on a journey to reunite with old flames and

look for clues to about his son's existence.

* Homeland Security is one step away from yellow star badges: RFIDs

for foreign visitors

* How Payola Went Corporate | Variety article

Is it any wonder that radio is crap?

"Song pluggers" urged certain songs on big band leaders in the

1930's and 40's, accompanied by bundles of cash to make the musical

choice easier. Disc jockeys in the 1950's were handed cash bribes

or fur coats for their wives. The independent promoters of the late

1970's and 1980's plied station directors with drugs and

prostitutes.

* Accessory to Murder

A backpack! Has a more ordinary, more benign, more ubiquitous

accouterment of modern life ever taken on such a sudden connotation

of darkness?

M.I.A. "URAQT"

vs.

Can "I Want More"

A sonic clash that transforms M.I.A.'s grimey tune into a bright and

sunny kraut pop mash.
