My Morning Download 11/1/07 - The Philistines Jr.
When he's not busy producing, mixing or engineering albums for bands
like Interpol, The National, Mates of State, Tokyo Police Club, The
Twilight Sad, Oakley Hall, Robbers On High Street (and others), Peter
Katis - owner of Tarquin Studios and Tarquin Records - happens to be
in a band called The Philistines Jr. The overachiever he seemingly is
however, is that Peter is also in the hockey obsessed band The
Zambonis.
Along with his brother Tarquin, drummer Adam Pierce and an extended
musical family, Philistines Jr. have sort of taken a back seat to
Peter's busy studio schedule. Musically the band have been going at it
since the Nineties and have managed to release an assortment of albums
and EP's (and hey - they've even made some videos), and are currently
working on some new material which will hopefully see a proper release
in 2008. For now though, you can grab some tunes from their myspace.
Philistines Jr. are sort of hard to describe - they're an oddball lot
lyrically, but are warm and friendly sounding - like some strange
combination of Eels, Brian Eno's "Another Green World," The Left
Banke, and a less-stressed out Postal Service Postal Service. All
said, the band's quirky, infectious and highly lovable take on the
indie-nerdy orch-pop genre is worthy of your love. All this and some
very cool looking artwork as well.
