mp3 Intonation, Day One: Ghostface Killah, Lady Sovereign, The Streets,

bonus MP3

Ok, I had to run a bunch of errands and ended up missing Jose

Gonzalez, The Stills, and The Boredoms. I also found out on the

website (and it's on the ticket) that they don't allow re-entry. Can

anyone confirm that this is enforced? I'm not hanging around all

afternoon tomorrow to wait for Bloc Party.

Anyhoo, the crowd was fantastic. I can't estimate how many people

there were; maybe 5000-10000. I am one of those who always loses the

"guess how many marbles in a jar" game. There were lots of college

kids and Y-ers, a few X-ers, and some jailbait too.

Btw, I apologize for my crappy 2-megapixel camera. I swear it was

latest gear 5 years ago.

The first act I saw was Ghostface. He seemed quite amused that the

predominantly white crowd could rap along and knew all the old school

sh*t. He spat rhymes from 'Fishscale', of course, but also dug into

the extensive backcatalog of Wu-Tang, including Triumph, and old 36

Chambers stuff. The ODB tribute was a fitting rap elegy.

He asked some random girls to come up on stage and "Shake Dat Ass".

Wu-Tang is here forever. Muthaf*cka!

The crowd paces over to the Virtue stage for the S-O-Veeeeee.

Lady Sovereign had her ponytail tied loosely on the left side of her

head and spat foul lyrics that would make George Carlin blush. Was

Chi-Town ready for grime? Well, sort of. Unfortunately, she missed out

on the opportunity to really excite the crowd since she paced around

only in the middle of the stage (and some to her left).

Make way for the S-O-Veeeeeee.

Walk to your right on the stage pl-eeeeeeze.

Thankfully, the crowd did get into "Hoodie" and "Random".

Random DJ shot.

Finally, Mike Skinner (aka The Streets) took the stage. I was

skeptical of how effective he would be to close day one. Well, I was

pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be the strongest performance of

the night, thanks to the terrific backing band and vocalist.

Can you see him?

Ah, there he is.

Mike tried really hard to get the crowd to jump, to no avail. Sorry

Mike, the only way to get the tired, lead-footed, reefered-out crowd

to jump would be to play House of Pain's 'Jump Around' (and relocate

the crowd to a sh*tty dive bar).

In anticipation of Bloc Party tomorrow, I leave you this: The Streets

cribbing Bloc Party's Banquet and rapping about stealing BBC Radio 1

DJ Jo Whiley's microphone to record his second album. Funny stuff.
